WILLIAM EDOUARD SCOTT (1884 - 1964)
Haitian Scene.

Oil on canvas, mounted on wood panel, circa 1931. 300x400 mm; 11 3/4x16 inches. Signed in oil, lower left.

Provenance: private New York collection.

Scott spent the year of 1931 painting in Port-au-Prince on a Julius Rosenwald scholarship. His large Night Turtle Fishing in Haiti is in the Clark Atlanta University Collection of Afro-American Art. His visit to Haiti is also credited for stimulating an interest in painting local scenes with Haitian artists, and possibly inspired Aaron Douglas to visit there during his Rosenwald scholarship in 1938. Reynolds/Wright p. 255.
