WILLIAM ENGLAND (died 1896)
Views of America, Horseshoe Fall, Niagara. Arch-topped albumen print, the image measuring 9x11 1/8 inches (22.9x28.3 cm.), the mount 13 1/2x17 3/4 inches (34.3x45.1 cm.), with London Stereoscopic & Photographic Company's credit, their London address, and the caption printed on mount recto. 1859

In 1854 England joined the London Stereoscopic Company, eventually becoming the company's principal photographer. In 1859 he traveled to America and brought back a series of stereo views of America and Canada which provided European audiences with some of their first stereoscopic views of North America. Most of his known American photographs are stereo views; larger prints are extremely rare. See Ian Jeffrey, An American Journey: The Photography of William England (Prestel Publishers, 2005).
