WILLIAM H. BRADLEY (1868-1962)

BRADLEY HIS BOOK / WOMAN'S NUMBER. July, 1896.

19½x9¼ inches, 49½x23½ cm. Wayside Press, Springfield, Massachusetts.
Condition A-: minor tears and abrasions at edges; tipped to mount. Matted and framed.

The appeal of Bradley's work was international as can be seen in the fact that four of his posters were reproduced in Les Maitres de l'Affiche and eleven were included in Les Affiches Étrangères Illustrées. This poster was known as "In Green and Gold" and was based on the cover of the book. It was the third time Bradley used a peacock in one of his major works, which is not surprising, given that "Art Nouveau artists had an almost fetishistic relationship [with the bird]" (Swann Sale 1975 Lot 79).

Koch p. 78, Bradley p. 31, Kiehl 32, Reims 1133, DFP-I 172.
