WILLIAM H. BRADLEY CHAP BOOK. 1895.
211/2x141/2 inches.
Condition B+: pinholes in corners; restored losses in top right and bottom left corners.
A young couple, "The Poet and His Lady," in medieval garb, sit reading from the Chap Book amidst the trees and shrubbery of a forest. The influence of Aubrey Beardsley in the "swirling lines [and] attention to ornamental detail" (Margolin p. 15) are apparent in this, Bradley's only black and white poster for the Chap Book. The black and white is also reminiscent of book designs by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris (see the Kelmscott Chaucer), upon whose medieval-inspired work Bradley rested much of his style. Kiehl 16, DFP I 155, Maitres pl. 136, Koch p. 66, Virginia p. 54, Margolin p. 106.
