WILLIAM H. BRADLEY THE CHAP BOOK / THANKSGIVING NO. 1895
21x14 inches.
Condition B+: minor tears, creases and foxing in margins; slight abrasions in image. Paper.
His style, sometimes referred to as American Art Nouveau, a combination of Aubrey Beardsley and the work of the Arts and Crafts movement, Bradley "transformed their styles into exceptionally bold and successful designs." (Word and Image p. 20). "Because of his early training as a printer, Bradley's posters are distinguished by their good taste in typography which is an integral part of the design" (Margolin p. 27). As an indication of the degree to which Bradley was associated/connected with the Art Nouveau movement -- this and several other of his posters were included in the show that marked the opening of Siegfried Bing's Salon de l'Art Nouveau on December 26, 1895. This poster was so popular with collectors that it was out of print in less than two months. Kiehl 23, DFP I 151, Reims 1141, Margolin p. 98, Weill 121, Maitres 1900 p. 111, Koch p. 8, Virginia p. 55.
