WILLIAM H. BRADLEY THE CHAP BOOK. January, 1895.
215/8x133/8 inches. Stone and Kimball, Chicago.
Condition B+: restored loss in bottom left corner; restoration in margins; crease through image.
A young couple, "The Poet and His Lady," in medieval garb, sit reading from the Chap Book amidst the trees and shrubbery of a forest. The influence of Aubrey Beardsley in the "swirling lines [and] attention to ornamental detail" (Margolin p. 15) are apparent in this, Bradley's only black and white poster for the Chap Book. The black and white is also reminiscent of book designs by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris (see the Kelmscott Chaucer), upon whose medieval-inspired work Bradley rested much of his style. Bradley moved to Springfield Massachusetts at the end of 1894. During the next year, although removed from Chicago, he designed 5 more posters for the Chap Book. Kiehl 16, DFP I 155, Maitres pl. 136, Koch p. 66, Virginia p. 54, Margolin p. 106.
