WILLIAM H. BULL (1861-1940) CRATER LAKE / SOUTHERN PACIFIC. 1923. 23x16 inches, 58 1/2x40 1/2 cm. Condition A- / A: expertly-repaired tears at left edge and minor restoration in top corners. Paper. Bull's deft ability to depict scenes of romance and scale made him a prolific designer for Southern Pacific, and "his work dominated the road's advertising output well into the 1920s" (Zega, p. 15). Here, Bull lent his skill to the advertisement of Oregon's scenic Crater Lake, which consists of "21 square miles of water so intensely blue it looks like ink, ringed by cliffs towering up to 2,000 feet above. The mountain bluebird, Indian legend says, was gray before dipping into the waters. The tranquil Gem of the Cascades is set in a dormant volcano called Mount Mazama, one in the chain of volcanoes that includes Mount St. Helens. Mount Mazama's eruption about 5700 B.C. catapulted volcanic ash miles into the sky and expelled so much pumice and ash that the summit soon collapsed, creating a huge, smoldering caldera.
