WILLIAM H. JOHNSON (1901 - 1970)
Untitled (Bazaars behind Olso Domkirke).

Woodcut on a heavy, fibrous handmade buff paper, circa 1935. 292x318 mm; 11 1/2x12 1/2 inches, thread- to 1 inch margins. Artist's proof. A very good dark, inky impression of this extremely scarce print.

Provenance: the estate of Holcha Krake; by descent to her grandniece, Johanna Voll.

We have not located any other impressions of this print. William H. Johnson made another similar woodcut of The Domkirke, one of Oslo's most prominent churches, and an oil painting. The alternate view woodcut, Oslo Domkirke (Behind the Bazaar), is illustrated in William H. Jonson: Truth Be Told. His oil painting Bazaars behind Church, Oslo, circa 1935, is in the collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC, and is illustrated in Richard J. Powell's Homecoming: The Art and Life of William H. Johnson. Turner/Dailey 34; Powell 78.
