Woodcut on light tan wove paper, circa 1933-34. 294x223 mm; 11 5/8x8 7/8 inches, full margins. One of only a few known proofs. Signed and titled in pencil, lower margin.. Ex-collection the artist to Thomas Pederson, the Danish photographer, 1934, thence by descent in his family. A superb impression of this extremely scarce print.
Pedersen (1900-1975), best known for his portraits of Danish artists and writers, took 4 photographs of Johnson and others of his work on December 10-11, 1934, at the Århus Kunstbygning. In exchange for his work, Johnson presented Pedersen with this woodcut (see Turner/Dailey, William H. Johnson: Truth Be Told<>, 1998, no. 33).
