James (1882-1961) was the son of noted philosopher William James, Sr. and the nephew of the writer Henry James. The sitter of this portrait is Alice Howe Gibbons James whose biography "Alice in Jamesland: The Story of Alice Howe Gibbons James" by Susan E. Gunter was published in 2009 and describes her life in the James family.
