WILLIAM LAWSON (DATES UNKNOWN)

NEW ENGLAND VIA MAINLINER / UNITED AIR LINES. Circa 1953.

30x20 1/4 inches, 76 1/4x51 1/2 cm.
Condition B: extensive overpainting and repaired tears in text and image; creases and abrasions at edges and in image.

Boston's Old North Church, built in 1723, and famously the site of Paul Revere's "one if by land, two if by sea" signal, seen beneath the shadow of the wing of an United Air Lines Mainliner flying overhead. In 1954, the church's steeple was felled by a hurricane; the current steeple, while drawing on original designs (and the re-designs after an earlier hurricane in 1804 also brought the steeple down) appears different to the one Lawson captures here. Rare.
