WILLIAM M. MACLANE (1924-2000)

Untitled (Three Prints).
Three offset lithographs. Each sheet 203x254 mm; 8x10 inches (sheet). Each hand-signed, 2 with the artist's stamp in ink, verso. Circa 1950s.

William M. MacLane lived in Washington and was known for abstract painting and male pin-up art. A former Marine, he gained notoriety in the mid 1950's as a Physique artist. His work was offered for sale in Physique Pictorial published by (AMG) American Model Guild. As well as illustrated in the TACHEN book "BEEFCAKE."

Like many gay-male erotic illustrators of the 20th century he sold lithographs of his drawings nationwide through the USPS as it was illegal to distribute due to the late-nineteenth-century Comstock laws. The laws were active through the 1960s when many were reshaped or simply repealed.

There are only three known catalogues of MacLaine's work published and there are from Catalouge B, number 9, 10, and 13. The 3 prints offered were illustrated in a 1954 issue of Physique Pictorial; rare signed and stamped prints are the only ones ever offered at public auction.
