WILLIAM PRYOR FLOYD (1834-circa 1900)
Two photographs from his successful Hong Kong studio, one a portrait of a water coolie, the other a seated man. Albumen prints, the first image measuring 10 3/8x8 3/8 inches (26.3x21.3 cm.), the mount 16 7/8x12 3/8 inches (42.9x31.4 cm.), with later notations in pencil in an unknown hand on mount verso, the second 9 1/2x7 inches (24.1x17.8 cm.), the mount slightly larger. Circa 1870-75

Floyd joined the Hong Kong studio Silveira & Co. in 1866-67, and soon became its owner. His "Victoria Photographic Gallery" was located on Queen's Road Central. Terry Bennett describes the studio as "one of the most successful commercial operations of its kind in the Far East" (Bennett, History of Photography in China, Western Photographers 1861-1879), but by 1875 Floyd moved to the Philippines.
