WILLIAM SIDNEY MOUNT
Portrait of a Young Woman (Miriam Doughty Underhill).

Oil on canvas, circa 1838. 304x255 mm; 11 7/8x10 inches.

Provenance: Private collection, Massachusetts.

The sitter is believed to be Miriam Doughty Underhill (1820-1868), of whom a larger oil on canvas portrait by Mount (1807-1868) is in the collection of the Long Island Museum, Stony Brook (Mount was a lifelong resident of Setauket, New York and the adjacent village of Stony Brook). Miriam Doughty Underhill, born in Oyster Bay, was the daughter of Benjamin Townshend Underhill and Eliza Weeks. According to Mount's diary entries published in Alfred Frankenstein's 1975 monograph, William Sidney Mount, Miriam Doughty Weeks, the sitter's maternal grandmother and namesake, sat for Mount for five portraits that were ordered for each of her children in 1842.
