WILLIAM STEIG (1907-2003) GET IN THE SCRAP! / RUBBER AND METAL COLLECTION DEPOT. Circa 1942.
57 1/2x39 3/4 inches, 146x101 cm. National Printing & Eng Co., Chicago.
Condition B / B+: repaired tears at edges, some through central image; losses, replaced losses, repaired tears and staining in margins; creases, abrasions and flaking in image and text.
Steig, who began drawing cartoons for the New Yorker magazine in 1930, designed a small handful of posters during the Second World War. Here, in his recognizable (although racist by contemporary standards) cartoon style, he encourages people at home to become involved in the war effort by illustrating the double entendre in the word "scrap."
