Additional Details

William Jay Gaynor was elected as Mayor of New York in January 1910 and proved to be one of New York's most colorful and incorruptable politicians. Originally backed by Tammany Hall, Gaynor soon gained the public's trust by filling government positions with experts and civil servants, rallying to expand the subway system, and walking the 5 miles from Brooklyn to City Hall every day. Just a few months into his term, a disgruntled city employee shot him in the neck. Though he quickly recovered from the wound and finished out his term, he died suddenly from complications from the shooting shortly after accepting a nomination to run for a second term.
