Additional Details

"How cruel it is for the whites to take the poor Negroes from their homes, and carry them away to make slaves of them." Cordelia Williams' little essay on slavery was no doubt written for school. It bears two pencil notes, probably from her teacher; one regarding the use of a period next the title "Slaves" at the top of the page, and another crossing out the word "Natives," and substituting the word "Negroes." The daguerreotype served as the model for the watercolor portrait that accompanies the framed essay.
Cordelia Williams was born in Springfield Massachusetts on August 17, 1821. She was married to Sullivan Bragg in 1841. According to the town records, Cordelia Bragg Williams passed away from consumption in 1847.
