WILLLIAM H. BRADLEY (1868-1962) HOOD'S SARSAPARILLA. 1896.
41 1/2x28 inches. J. Ottman Litho Co., Puck Building, New York.
Condition B / B+: tape stains through margins affecting image; repaired tear through bottom margin into image. Mounted to board.
1896 was a busy year for Bradley. He designed five posters for his eponymous self printed publication Bradley: His Book and also "seven posters for commercial clients, no two of which are alike. All were available for purchase from the Wayside Press for prices ranging from fifty cents to a dollar and a half . . . the Hood's poster . . . was lithographed in five colors. It is unique for Bradley, as it shows influence from French posters, particularly those by Georges de Feure for Paris Almanach of 1894 and by Toulouse-Lautrec." (Bradley p. 99). It also reflects the common practice in French posters of a woman admiringly holding a glass (in France generally of liqueur) up to the light. One of Bradley's rarest posters and an exquistite combination of his American Arts and Crafts style mixed with contemporary French style. Not in Bradley.
