WILLLIAM H. BRADLEY (1868-1962) VICTOR BICYCLES / OVERMAN WHEEL CO. 1895.
40 1/2x13 inches, 103x33 cm. J. Ottoman Lith. Co., New York.
Condition B: horizontal tears, creases and abrasions at edges through image; minor loss in upper right corners; pin holes in corners. Paper. Framed.
His style, sometimes referred to as American Art Nouveau, a combination of Aubrey Beardsley and the work of the Arts and Crafts movement, Bradley "transformed their styles into exceptionally bold and successful designs." (Word and Image p. 20). "Because of his early training as a printer, Bradley's posters are distinguished by their good taste in typography which is an integral part of the design" (Margolin p. 27). This was Bradley's first poster for the Overman Wheel Company who manufactured Victor Bicycles. It is familiarly refered to as "The Knickerbockers," because of the outfit worn by the cyclist. Tall, thin images surrounded by a decorative, floral border was a motif frequently used by Bradley. Reims, DFP-I 164, Keihl 24, Margolin p. 185.
