WILLY VON BECKERATH (1868–1938) BADENWEILER. 1908.
361/2x241/4 inches. Holzhauser, Berlin.
Condition B+: restoration in margins; overpainting in image.
Von Beckerath was a painter and member of the German Arts and Crafts Movement. He was a cofounder of the Werkstätten für Kunst und Handwerk in München, one of the groups that grew into the Deutsche Werkbund, the leading arts and craft movement on the continent at that time. He is perhaps most famous for his portraits of Johannes Brahms, who was a friend of his parents. This is his only known poster, and it is a solid Secession-style composition with natural forms and motifs. DFP III 83.
