WINSLOW HOMER
Seated Woman Wearing a Hat with a Feather Plume.

Pen and dark brown ink on cream wove paper, circa 1865. 110x73 mm; 4 3/8x3 inches. Signed and inscribed "New York City" in ink, lower margin. Ex-collection Aloyis Lee Sonneborn, Mobile, Alambama; sold Neal Auction, New Orleans, November, 2014.

This figure drawing, probably made as an illustration on a letter written by Homer, is likely based on the woman standing at the far left in Croquet Scene, Homer's 1866 painting now at the Art Institute of Chicago. Though she appears seated in the drawing, the woman wears both a similar feather plumed hat and jacket/blouse and has a striking profile resemblance to the woman in the painting, identified as Homer's cousin and sometime model Florence Tyron (Homer's oil portrait of Tyron, from 1868, is now at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston).
