Winter (1836-1917) journalist, poet, biographer, and the foremost drama critic of his generation. He was part of a New York literary group that included Bayard Taylor and Walt Whitman. From 1865 to 1909 he was chief critic for The New York Tribune. He wrote books on theater, including Old Friends, Other Days, and The Wallet of Time, as well as biographies of David Belasco, Edwin Booth, Joseph Jefferson, and others.
