The letters range from 1856, where he asks for an invitation to speak as he is "greatly in need of dollars" to 1904 where he apologizes to a friend for not attending a tribute at the Author's Club; the quotations are from his own poems; and the manuscript is a review of a play titled "Mice and Men," signed with initials. Winter (1836-1917) journalist, poet, biographer, and the foremost drama critic of his generation. He was part of a New York literary group that included Bayard Taylor and Walt Whitman. From 1865 to 1909 he was chief critic for The New York Tribune. He wrote books on theater, including Old Friends, Other Days, and The Wallet of Time, as well as biographies of David Belasco, Edwin Booth, Joseph Jefferson, and others.
