Now for the first time, the venue for both winter and summer Games was to be America. The third Olympic Winter Games, in 1932, were held in Lake Placid, in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, a town with fewer than 4,000 inhabitants . . . Unfortunately the Games were held in the midst of a worldwide depression and many countries were unable to send well-prepared and equipped teams" (Olympics p. 41).
