An advertisement on the occasion of the periodical's 50th birthday stated, "If you were trying to reach an exclusive class, a number of people who can afford to buy and who have plenty of money to pay for what they buy, you would not think of placing the advertisement in a journal of a large and indiscrimintate circulation, but you would take the time to investigate the claims of a journal for the cultured . . . [the] San Francisco News Letter . . . has a circulation among the rich and well-to-do. It is the standard weekly newspaper of California" (N. W. Ayer & Son's American Newspaper Annual and Directory, p. 1260).
