WOLF KAHN

Oil on canvas, 2001. 653x502 mm; 25 3/4x19 3/4 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto, and titled and dated in silver ink on the stretcher bar, verso.

Born in Stuttgart in 1927, Kahn immigrated to the United States in 1945. He first attended the New School, New York, and studied painting under renowned Modernist Stuart Davis, and later trained with the proto-Abstract Expressionist Hans Hofmann. Along with other Hofmann students, he founded the cooperative Hansa Gallery, where he had his first solo show in 1953.

Kahn quickly emerged as one of the major players in the second generation of the New York school. He absorbed the expressive spontaneity and rich use of color from the Abstract Expressionists, but reintroduced nature into his art, drawing inspiration from the landscapes of Vermont, where he kept a studio starting in the summer of 1968.
