WOLFGANG WEINGART (1941 - ) DAS SCHWEIZER PLAKAT. 1983.
50 1/4x35 1/2 inches, 127 1/2x90 cm. Druck: Wassermann AG, Basel.
Condition A. Paper.
Weingart was primarily a self-taught designer and pioneer within the modernist movement. He moved to Basel in 1968 and began teaching at the Kunstgewerbeschule, challenging the rational order and dogmatic rules of the international style. "He instilled creativity and desire of experimentation into the ossified Swiss typographical industry and reflected this renewal in his own work" (Lars-Muller). "When others look for simplicity, he looks for complexity" (Schweiz p. 108). Inspired by the montage and collage technique and using new technologies, Weingart's posters surpass the concept of contemporary design and achieve a near alternative status. This poster advertises Bruno Margadant's book on the Swiss Poster, and the same image was used on the dust jacket of the book. It is, as usual, a complex construction using various elements like the Matterhorn and the Swiss flag in Weingart's unique way. Margadant cover, Affiches Suisses, 41, Modern Poster p. 250.
