WOOL, CHRISTOPHER. Black Book. 17 screen prints on wove paper. 23 x 16 inches; 580 x 405 mm, sheets. Folio, original black paper-covered boards, light wear; prints fine. Number 219 of 350 copies signed in black ink by Wool on the justification (there were also eight artist's proof examples). Christopher Wool made a name in the New York art scene in the early 1980s. His word paintings, which exemplify type as visual image, have become canonical. His early white canvases with black stenciled letters spelled out text like "Sell the house, sell the car, sell the kids" (in his 1998 work Apocalypse Now). Incorporating media and techniques including photography, silkscreen, reproduction, overpainting, and erasing, Wool's work often combines human and machine marks, as in his paintings in which he smudges black lines drawn with a spray gun into gray fields.
