Autograph Letter Signed, to "Dear Mr. Holmgren," hoping to acquire for his wife's September birthday an original painting by his father [Treasure Cave, first used as an illustration in the 1911 edition of Stevenson's Treasure Island]. 2 pages, 4to, personal stationery, written on two sheets; horizontal folds, received date stamped in red ink at upper edge of first page. "Many thanks for your fine letter concerning the idea of exchanging a painting by my father with a watercolor by myself.
"I do hope you will be able to locate the painting from Treasure Island titled in the Treasure Cave. This painting I last saw in Harrisburg Pennsylvania Museum. The picture was in bad condition but could be restored.
"I would like very much to get this for my wife's birthday gift if possible . . . ."
The painting, The Treasure Cave (1911), was exhibited in 1912 at the Society of Odd Brushes in Boston between February 17 and March 2, and again at the Philadelphia Sketch Club, November 4-23.
