Chamberlain (1927-2014) was an American artist who specialized in realism. Born in Minneapolis, he studied at the University of Idaho and later received a master's degree in philosophy at the University of Wisconsin where he also studied with magic realist John Wilde. He moved to New York, where he had his first solo exhibition at the Edwin Hewitt Gallery in 1957 and became known for his realist landscapes and interior scenes, which were exhibited throughout the United States. In the 1960s he became part of Andy Warhol's circle and was also friends with Willem de Kooning, William Burroughs, Frank O'Hara and Allen Ginsburg. Later in his career, he turned towards experimental film and theater before giving up on his creative pursuits to move to India and immerse himself in Hindu spirituality.
