TWO SCREENPRINTS. Wald, Sylvia (1915-2011)
Two screenprints.

Tag, You're It! 1941. Color screenprint on paper, unknown edition, hand signed, dated and titled by Wald in pencil on the lower blank margin (three small instances of tape residue to blank margin, light foxing to verso); 15 1/4 x 20 1/2 in.

City Lot on Sunday. 1946. Color screenprint on paper, unknown edition, hand signed and titled by Wald in pencil on the lower blank margin (two small closed tears to upper margin, mat burn to edges, small section of residue to verso); laid-in with artwork is Wald's registration card for this piece to be included in The Brooklyn Museum Print Annual, and is completed with her information and signature; 21 x 16 in.

Wald's foray into screen-printing began in 1941, making Tag, You're It! one of her earliest works. The vibrant colors and lively composition are hallmarks of her training as a painter, but the work also incorporates early examples of her use of abstract expressionist techniques which would come to define her projects post-1950. Sylvia Wald's pieces are featured prominently in many major institutional collections such as Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, The Brooklyn Museum, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, in New York, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, France, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England.
