Walter, Valerie Harrisse (1892-1984)
Cow and Calf.
Early-20th century.

Bronze sculpture depicting a seated cow licking her infant calf; signed "Walter" on the base with a small swirl; foundry mark of the Roman Bronze Works, N.Y. on base; patinated, 6 x 3 3/4 x 3 1/2 in. high.

Walter grew up in Baltimore and is known for her depictions of animals in bronze. She studied at the Maryland Institute, under Henry Augustus Lukeman in New York, and traveled to Paris in 1922 to continue her sculptural ambitions. She was inspired by a captive gorilla named John Daniel II whom she saw at the circus in 1924. She went on to create a lifesized sculpture of him, which is exhibited at the Baltimore Zoo.
