Walton, Izaak (1593-1683)
The Compleat Angler.

Chiswick: Caradoc Press, 1905.

Limited edition, octavo; copy number 68 of 350; illustrated with an engraved frontispiece portrait, additional title, and 6 illustrations; bound in a Cosway-style binding by Rivière of full green morocco with a hand painted miniature portrait of the author under glass laid into the front board, tooled in gilt with a fishing line motif, spine in six compartments with flies, baskets, and fish stamped in gilt, turn-ins and edges gilt-decorated, pale yellow moire silk endleaves, all edges gilt; ex-libris Tore Wretman bookplate to preliminary blank: 8 1/8 x 5 1/4 in.

This deluxe edition of Walton's 1653 ode to fishing belonged to the well-known Swedish chef and restauranteur, Tore Wretman (1916-2003). Wretman created Toast Skagen, a mainstay of Swedish cuisine, and helped raise the status of professional chefs and gastronomy in his home country. He also successfully encouraged home chefs to hone their skills in the kitchen and urged men be more involved with cooking for their families. The present lot was also owned by another great restauranteur, New York City's Sheldon "Shelly" Fireman, who founded many of the city's beloved eateries, including The Hip Bagel, Redeye Grill, Café Fiorello, and Brooklyn Diner.

From the Library of Sheldon "Shelly" Fireman.
