Wanckel was a Franciscan friar who traveled to the Holy Land in 1510 or 1511. He lived at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher for a year and was active in the convent of Zion. At some point, he was brought to Cairo by the Egyptian Sultan, where he worked as a diplomatic messenger between the Egyptians and the Vatican.
