Wells (1902-91) attended Lincoln University before transferring to Columbia University, where he majored in art. Early influences were Albrecht Duerer and the German Expressionists. After graduating, he worked predominantly with woodblock prints, illustrating magazines and books. In 1931 he won the Harmon Gold Medal for his painting, "Flight into Egypt." Through the 1930s and 1940s he chose to work almost entirely as a printmaker.
