First edition, large quarto, illustrated with two folding plates (including frontispiece view) and five full-page plates, with engraved vignettes to the two divisional titles; bound in near-contemporary speckled calf tooled in gilt with an older rebacking, ex-libris University of Chicago Libraries with de-accession stamp on verso of title page and other unobtrusive inscriptions and stamps inside front board and on the advertisement leaf, none elsewhere; 9 3/4 x 7 1/2 in.
Most of the text of the natural history section is taken up with ornithological observations on British birds, although other creatures and phenomena are also discussed. White organizes his notes in a chatty epistolary format.
