Wilke, Hannah (1940-1993)
Untitled.

1963-66.

Ink, pastel, and pencil drawing on paper, signed in pencil at lower right; 449 x 1168 mm; 35 x 46 in.

As a second wave feminist artist, Wilke explored the themes of femininity and sexuality across many disciplines, including painting, sculpture, and performance art. She grew up on Long Island and received her BFA and Bachelor of Science in Education from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. Ten years later, in 1972, she mounted solo exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles. Wilke's unflinching depiction of the female body, often her own, strikes back at the male gaze through direct confrontation.
