The RMS Majestic was a White Star ocean liner working on the North Atlantic route, originally launched in 1914 as the Hamburg America Line SS Bismarck. She was the largest ship until the completion of the Normandie. Born in Milwaukee as the son of a shipbuilder, Aylward studied art in Chicago and New York, and was a student of Howard Pyle. He traveled through France and painted for several years, while pursuing a career as an illustrator. Best known as a nautical painter, Aylward became a war artist during WWI, and then returned to illustration. His works appeared in publications such as Harper's and Scribners, as well as illustrated editions of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Weallans p. 81.
