YASUO KUNIYOSHI
Women with Yarn.

Gouache with white heightening on cream wove paper, circa 1917. 214x277 mm; 8 1/2x11 inches. Signed and dated "19--" in pencil, verso. Ex-collection Bumpei Usui, New York, with the red ink stamp and pencil inscription, verso.

When Kuniyoshi first arrived in New York in 1906, Bumpei Usui provided him with art supplies and room and board in exchange for drawings and paintings. The two shared common ground as Japanese-American artists working in New York. The current work is characteristic of Kuniyoshi's very early style, from the time he spent with Usui in the early 1900s.
