Yates''s work, immediately popular, became a finalist for the 1962 National Book Award, along with Catch-22 and The Moviegoer. The work, which Yates described as "an indictment of American life in the 1950s" was named among Time magazines 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to the present and was recently made into a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet .
