YEATS, WILLIAM BUTLER. Letter Signed, with a lengthy Autograph Postscript, to an unnamed recipient, concerning Welling's Farm, with references to its mention in William Blake's poem Jerusalem. 1 page, single 4to sheet; folds. Oxford, 24 November 1921

Additional Details

"I know nothing unfortunately of 'Welling's Farm' except its mention in a poem of William Blake's. I give that mention in my extracts from Blake's Preface to Chapter II of his 'Jerusalem.' It is mentioned in the same verse with the 'Jews Harp House' & a certain pond. The pond is at Hamstead & the two names, ('the Jews Harp House & the Green Man') were Public Houses in that neighborhood or direction. You can find them on old maps. I have probably seen 'Welling's Farm' on old maps too, but I am not certain. It was certainly somewhere in their direction. I am sorry not to be able to give you any more information . . . By direction I mean that is Blake was using the houses & the compass symbolically. 'Welling's Farm' would be in the same general direction with say 'The Jews Harp House' from some point in centre London . . ."
