Kamekura was inspired to become a graphic designer when he discovered the work of Cassandre, and he went on to dedicate the rest of his life to his craft. He was basically the Godfather of modern Japanese graphism, founding the Nippon Design Center (in 1960) and serving as president of JAGDA (the Japanese Graphic Design Association) for over 20 years. He won awards throughout the world for graphic design and was honored by the Japanese themselves in 1965 when the claimed him as a sacred treasure. That the Western World discovered Japanese poster can, in many ways, also be traced to Kamekura, when his designs began appearing in Graphis magazine: First his Nikon campaigns and then his emblematic campaign for the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. With an ever changing style and various techniques Kamekura had an influence on the generation that made Japanese graphism famous all over the world. In his earlier poster Kamekura uses a strict, abstract lyrical style strongly based on hard-lined geometrical designs. After 1960 he began to adapt a more sensuous approach. Kamekura 10, 44, 55, 63.
