Kurt Vonnegut was an American writer and humorist known for his satirical and darkly humorous novels, including Slaughterhouse-Five. Ray Bradbury was a famous American writer of science fiction, and most notably the author of The Martian Chronicles and Fahrenheit 451.

The two writers were photographed by Karsh together in 1990 as they were promoting works at the same time: The Ray Bradbury Theater, an anthology series scripted by the science-fiction writer, and Monkey House, a series focusing on stories from Vonnegut's collection Welcome to the Monkey House.
