YVES TANGUY
Rocher.

Pen and ink on wove paper, circa 1930. 310x217 mm; 12 1/4x8 1/2 inches. Ex-collection E.L.T. Mesens, Brussels; Conroy Maddox, London, from 1940, with an inscription on the verso; Richard L. Feigen & Co., New York (inventory number 15726-D); sold Sotheby`s New York, October 7, 1989, lot 147.

In 1930, Tanguy (1900-1955) traveled to North Africa and was inspired by elements of the African landscape like the Atlas Mountains. He turned to sketching solid, molded formations. These rocky forms would appear in his important Surrealist landscapes into the 1940s.
