Chicago-born Mariana Yampolsky immigrated to Mexico in 1952 and joined the Taller de Grafica Popular, an artist's co-op of painters and graphic designers interested in social and political issues. She was mostly known for her work as a printmaker and exhibited extensively throughout Mexico and the rest of the world. Later Yampolsky turned to photography, seeking to document the "complexities of Mexican culture, including its landscapes, folk art and poverty."
