ZAO WOU-KI
Jardin la Nuit.

Color lithograph, 1954. 440x570 mm; 17 3/8x22 1/2 inches, full margins. Signed, dated and numbered 37/95 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Desjobert, Paris. Published by Klipstein and Co., Berne. A superb impression with vibrant colors.

Chinese-born Zao Wou-ki (born 1920) visited Paris in 1948, ostensibly to study there for 2 years, and has ended up in France for decades. Early on he took a studio near Alberto Giacometti and by the 1950s had become close to other abstract artists in Paris, notably Hans Hartung, Nicolas de Stäel, Pierre Soulages, Vieira de Silva and Sam Francis. Zao Wou-ki's individualized Abstract Expressionism blends underlying strong colors with figural and landscape elements, as seen in these color lithographs (and lot 514). Agerup 87.
