Largely a self-taught artist, Rykr was a set designer at the National Theatre in Prague, an illustrator, painter, journalist and graphic designer. He is best remembered for his package designs for Orion, a Czech chocolate company, as well as corporate designs for Palaba, Bata and Skoda. In the late 1930s he designed a series of Czech travel posters, of which this is the most striking. His style varied from Surrealism to Cubism, and here, assumes a soft, ethereal quality in depicting the bridges over Prague's Vltava river at twilight. Rykr 285, Affiches Art Deco p. 111.
