ZIGOTO POLICIER. Circa 1912. 40 1/2x29 inches. Gaumont, Paris. Condition B: restoration and overpainting along vertical and horizontal folds; wrinkles and creases in image; restoration in image. A glorious Art Nouveau border, in green, yellow and orange, showing a muse with an early movie camera. In the middle is a photographic still from the film being advertised. A stock poster for Gaumont, that has been attributed to Mucha, not only for its decidedly Art Nouveau, Mucha-esque design, but because Mucha himself was very interested in movies. He admired "some of the early film pioneers, and it is known that he befriended the Lumiere Brothers as early as 1895. He also showed some of the very early films in his studio for friends" (Rennert/Weill p. 400).
