Illustrated with 11 plates, each in 4 states, including frontispieces; with etchings by Albert Duvivier and drawings by Édouard Dantan. Translation by T.F. Roberson. Printed in red and black. 2 volumes. 8vo, full turquoise morocco, double fillet gilt borders surrounding cornerpieces with interlocking torch motif, spine similarly tooled in compartments, joints slightly rubbed, all edges gilt; tan morocco doublures with green, blue and white onlays with cherubs and floral gilt sprays; blue moíre silk endpapers, mostly perished; unobtrusive gallery labels on final blanks. Provenance: laid-in is a typed letter from Hammer Galleries on their stationery stating that these volumes offered as part of the William Randolph Hearst Collection (Hammer Galleries, New York, March 1941; lot 750, Article 1757A). first edition, number one of only five sets of the two volume edition magnífíque, each with a fore-edge painting. Part of the Chefs-d'Oeuvre du Roman Contemporain series. Printed for subscribers only. Paintings show a couple embracing, and a female nude, on first and second volumes, respectively.
Each of the plates in this elaborate production appear in four different printings: on Japanese etching paper, papier de Chine, India paper, and on Dutch handmade paper. Limited to five copies indicated by asterisk rather than numbered.
