ZOOLOGISCHER GARTEN MÜNCHEN. 1911.
463/4x351/2 inches. G. Schuh, Munich.
Condition A-: repaired tears and overpainting in margins; creases in image.
An animal and nature lover (as well as an avid hunter), Hohlwein frequently used animals in his posters to advertise commercial products; he was also commissioned to advertise the creatures themselves. In 1911 and 1912 he created three posters for the Munich Zoo, which opened on August 1st, 1911. One with panthers, one featuring a pink flamingo (thematically similar to the poster Klinger designed for the Berlin Zoo, see 8 ), and lastly, one with eagles. Two variations of this poster exist, the other bears text announcing the Zoo's opening on August 1, which makes it apparent that of the three Zoo posters, the eagles were the first in the series. Hohlwein's draughtmanship at it's best. Hohlwein, p. 184 no. 80.
