First Manila edition of this grammatical work adapted by Zueco for the Bisayan or Visayan languages, a subgroup of the Austronesian languages spoken in the Philippines. Zueco was born in Spain and served as a priest in the Philippines. Heinrich Gottfried Ollendorff's (1803-1865) modern approach to foreign language instruction, very popular in the mid-19th century, drew heavily on the pioneering work of Jean Manesca.
